UNCERTAIN follows New York comedians Graham Kay and Kirk Smith as they confront deeply personal questions about the future care of their disabled family members. Graham’s adult brother, Peter, lives independently in Canada with support from their parents, leaving Graham to wrestle with what responsibility he may have when his parents can no longer provide day-to-day help. Kirk’s adult son, JJ, lives 4,000 miles away in Sweden in a supported living community, a stable arrangement that gives him the care he needs, though Kirk wrestles with the guilt of being so far away. Throughout the film, their comedy is a lens through which they explore love and responsibility, and the uncertainty that shapes their families’ futures.

UNCERTAIN opens a larger conversation about the shortage of high-quality, affordable, and appropriate supported living options for disabled adults in the United States. We meet other families searching for solutions, as well as advocates and experts who explain how the current long-term care system developed, where it is falling short, and why so many parents, siblings, and caregivers worry about the future. With humor, compassion, and an honest look at the complexity of real-life situations, the film explores the need for a broader range of person-centered housing and support models that can reflect the diverse needs and preferences of disabled individuals and their families.

Today, the vast majority of the millions of disabled adults in the United States who need significant support continue to live with their parents or family members. This arrangement becomes increasingly fragile as caregivers age or develop their own care needs and are no longer able to provide day-to-day support. Siblings often feel the weight of responsibility, unsure what role they want to or are expected to play in ongoing care. As families confront this reality, they often face a painful gap between what their loved ones need and what the current system can provide. Care workers are in short supply. High-quality, safe, affordable housing options remain limited. For many families, the question of who will care for their loved one when they no longer can feels so overwhelming that they can barely bring themselves to think about it.

UNCERTAIN puts this crisis into focus through personal stories, humor, and honest conversation. The film explores how America’s long-term care system is falling short, why one-size-fits-all solutions fail people with diverse support needs, and what it would take to build a full range of supported living options rooted in safety, dignity, choice, and community. Amanda Dyer is a Nashville-based director, producer, and business owner. She is the co-director of UNSEEN: How We’re Failing Parent Caregivers & Why It Matters, an award-winning feature documentary that has screened around the world and broadcast nationally on public television and ABC. Amanda also runs a web design and development agency, and has led marketing and creative teams in corporate and nonprofit settings. Her work brings together storytelling, outreach and advocacy to help audiences understand the realities facing families who provide care.

Tom Dyer is a Nashville-based director and cinematographer. He is the co-director of UNCERTAIN: The Search for Supported Living and UNSEEN: How We’re Failing Parent Caregivers & Why It Matters, an award-winning feature documentary that has screened around the world and broadcast nationally on public television and ABC. Tom has extensive experience directing films for brands and mission-driven organizations, traveling around the world to create short films, documentaries, and digital content. With an audio engineering background and passion for emotive storytelling, Tom brings a diverse skill set and a careful balance of technical expertise and artful choices to every project.
